WHO WE ARE
Our Practice
Originally established in 1985 as The Learning Centre, we initially catered for counselling, consultancy and educational services. We added Clinical Hypnotherapy services in 1988.
Our clinic expanded in 1996 to become HRD (Australia), better known as Human Resource Development (Australia), with business management and training added to our portfolio.
Since 2015 our emphasis has been primarily providing clinical care with counselling, psychotherapy and clinical hypnotherapy services for people wanting to overcome personal or professional issues that they may be struggling with.
What We Offer
Our main concern is to help individuals heal and energise, becoming aware of their inner strengths and to re-assimilate fully into society.
We achieve this by providing a neutral and safe place in which to listen to your concerns, enabling you to customise a treatment plan that suits your individual needs. We assist you through cognitive counselling methodologies, psychotherapy and clinical hypnotherapy.

Mental Health
Many individuals can experience symptoms associated with painful and traumatic circumstances. Anxiety, fear, and hopelessness are a few emotions that can linger post traumatic events. We can help you overcome these symptoms and guide you through the process of grief and healing.

Bushfire assistance
Free counselling services 2020 - 2022
HRD (Australia) is offering free counselling services to any person impacted by the bushfires as they transit through Canberra. We can provide a mobile service to any part of Canberra. Please ring us on 0422 967 969 if you require our assistance.
Note: this service had been operating since early February and was wound back during July as we concentrated on working directly at the south coast of NSW. Every second week we are working Mondays and Tuesdays at the south coast.
We are now providing free counselling services for anyone transiting Canberra who may have been impacted by the 2022 floods in QLD and/or NSW.

Food and Medications
Additional free services 2020-2022
During these uncertain times of Corona Virus many elderly, sick and single parents are finding it difficult to get out and purchase necessary food and medical supplies. At HRD (Australia) we understand your needs. For Kambah residents we are now providing a FREE service to pick up and deliver your groceries and medicines for those in genuine need. Please contact us if we can be of assistance.

WINTER SOUP KITCHEN
Home made soup 2020
For several years now we have had a soup kitchen at St Thomas the Apostle Church in Kambah during the Winter months (June through to August inclusive). This year due to Covid 19 restrictions, the soup kitchen will deliver soup to people in the Kambah area. If you would like to volunteer to assist, we require soup makers, packers, delivery drivers and support for our ingredients and containers. Please contact us if you would like to help out. Our soup will be provided to anyone in the local community that requires it. We anticipate soup being made in the first week of June with deliveries commencing from Saturday 6 June.
As of 1 July we are into Week 6 of the Winter Soup Kitchen. On average we have one volunteer soup maker each week and we are delivering soup to approximately 12-15 families including leaving some for distribution at St Thomas the Apostle Primary School. If you would like to contribute your time and expertise with soup making, delivering soup or even donating soup making items (lentils, soup mix, split peas, vegetables etc) then please contact us on telephone 0422 967969 or leave a message at St Thomas the Apostle Parish Church on telephone 6231 9219 or email kambah@cg.org.au
Week 7 and we are now halfway through the Winter Soup Kitchen. Once again some of our repeat chefs (Bruna, Helen and Simon) have been helping us out with some terrific soups: Pea and Ham, Pumpkin, Potato and Leek, and Minestrone. With school holidays now on we have taken some soup down to the Mental Health (ACT) residential home in Kambah as well as delivering to some of our Vincentian families and local parishioners. We do have gaps for soup makers for the 25/26 July as well as for the last three weekends in August. If you can help us please contact us as per the above.
Week 8 and Andrew and Cecily are cooking up some Hungarian soup this coming weekend. This will be distributed to families throughout Kambah following Simon's Vegetable and Barley soup which was well received by 10 families last weekend,. We have 6 more weeks left in our Soup Kitchen and we still need help for soup makers for the weekend of the 25/26 July as well as for the last 3 weekends in August. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as would donations of soup making ingredients.
Week 9 and Mary Anne's Vegetable Soup together with Andrew and Cecily's Mushroom Soup were distributed to 11 Canberra families as well as making it to Cooma for Fr Adrian and Fr Mick at St Patrick's. The two priests were cooking up a BBQ when we arrived but because of Covid 19 restrictions we didn't stick around (actually it was too cold!) The last few containers of soup were dropped off to St Thomas the Apostle Primary School on Thursday. Thank you folks for your continued support. Also a big thank you to Pat for her financial contribution to soup making supplies. This week we are a bit short of soup makers but hey, I am a big believer in prayer and I'm sure I won't be left with the duties myself. Please contact me if you can help out.
Week 10 and Soupe aux Legumes was made by parishioner and French chef, Michele, last week. It was distributed to 11 families and our school. Some folks even received pizzas (courtesy of Gordon IGA) and bread (from the Kambah Village Bakery). This week we have Bruna cooking up a storm and a generous donation from Janelle and Warwick will give us a good start for next week.
Week 11 up-date. Four soup varieties, Pumpkin, Chicken and Corn, Minted Pea and Italian were generously made by Sandy and Bruna. Ten local families received soup along with our school and a neighbourhood Respite Care home. On Saturday soup was also delivered to Fr Adrian and Fr Mick at Cooma. Fr Adrian was preparing to travel to Bombala to say Mass although he was suffering from a hamstring injury! He passes on his best wishes to everyone. Week 12 up-date. Thank you to Zinka for the donation of lemons and Barbara for the soup vegetables. These were distributed along with Chicken Combo Soup to nine families and our school. An anonymous soup maker (trying to get on My Kitchen Rules) was responsible for this week's delicious recipe.
With only three weeks left in our Winter Soup Kitchen we still require a couple of soup makers. Please ring Michael T. on 0408 626918 if you can assist.
Week 13 up-date. Chicken Supreme with Minestra di Verdura was made by our Italian connections last week and distributed to a dozen local families and our school as well as a couple of them finding their way to Cooma. Only two weeks left for the Winter Soup Kitchen. Don't miss out on your turn.
Week 14 up-date. Lia's Pumpkin Soup was well received last week and distributed to many deserving families in the Parish. This week for our final week for the Winter Soup Kitchen we have Bruna's assistance once again with Sweet Potato, Pumpkin and Potato Soup together with a Pea and Ham Soup. Our final Report on the Winter Soup Kitchen will appear here next week.
Week 15 up-date. This is our final Soup Kitchen Report for this year. We would like to thank all those who have donated ingredients, supplies, money and containers and especially those who have made soup over the last 15 weeks throughout June to August inclusive. Many families have been the recipients of our soup and we hope it has brought a little bit of cheer to them during these difficult times. Once again thank you for your kind support.
Spring CARE BASKETS
Care Baskets 2020 - 21
Spring? What is in the offering? Well next week (start of September) we start our Care Baskets. Each week throughout September, October and November, a family in our Parish will receive a Gift Basket with a range of goodies including a selection from personal care items, sweets, wine and a range of vouchers (ie from McDonalds, Goodberry's, Trev's Cafe, Choku Bai Jo etc). Week One: (Monday 7 September). During Spring we are delivering a weekly basket of goodies to local families. This week we had the pleasure of taking a Care Basket to Josie who celebrated her 93rd birthday. And while our Winter Soup Kitchen has officially concluded we also had soup delivered to some families courtesy of Sandy.
Week Two: (Monday 14 September). Our second Care Basket has gone to a family of three in our Parish (a mum, dad and son) who have all been suffering recently from a variety of illnesses. We hope that the goodies have brightened up their day. If you would like to contribute care items for our baskets or to nominate a recipient for a Care Basket, please contact Michael on 0408 626918.
Week Three: (Monday 21 September). Our third Care Basket made it to Cooma for Fr Adrian's birthday. His favourite gift was the McDonald's Voucher. He sends his blessings and best wishes to all our parishioners. Please keep the personal care items and treats coming in. Thank you to Barbara for the goodies last weekend. Please contact me if you wish to nominate a recipient for our Care Baskets.
Week Four and Week Five (covering both Monday 28 September/Monday 5 October). Two baskets were delivered today to birthday boys, Barry and Lawrence. These guys spend most of their time doing great work for Vinnies so it was extra special to be able to give them something back. A special thank you to Bruna for the donation of goodies over the weekend.
Week Six and Week Seven (covering both Monday 12 October/Monday 19 October). A basket of goodies was dropped around to both Jenny and Jane this week. They contained some lovely biscuits (courtesy of Bruna), a bottle of wine, and amongst other things, vouchers for a restaurant meal, Goodberry's Frozen Custard, a McDonald's Happy Meal and fruit and vegies at an organic vegie shop.
For the next few weeks we are doing up plant Care Baskets. These will contain a variety of plants, bulbs, seedlings, cuttings and fresh flowers and herbs. Thank you to Peter Fletcher and Leonie Lucy who have offered at this stage to make some garden donations.
Our Care Baskets will continue through until the end of November. If you would like to make a donation of goodies or have a recipient in mind to receive a basket, please get in touch with me.
Week Seven (continued): we commenced the Plant Care Baskets this week and these were delivered to two families. A special thank you to Leonie, Deb and Andrew for providing some lovely plants and other goodies. My 2 year old grandson assisted with potting up some of the tomato seedlings for the Care Basket recipients.
Week Eight: Spring Care Baskets were delivered to Bruna and Trish . Both baskets contained some plants/seedlings and a range of delicacies including biscuits, sweets and bathroom essentials. And each recipient was given some Vouchers for use at a restaurant, a take away, a fruit and vegie shop as well as one for an establishment known for its famous icecream/frozen custard .
Week Nine: a tray of Care Baskets was delivered to St Thomas the Apostle Catholic Primary School to celebrate World Teachers' Day. We value the dedication and commitment of our teachers in our community.
Week Ten: one of our Vincentians, Rex, has been back in hospital and a Care Basket of goodies was dropped around to his wife Corrine during the week. Thank you to Deb, Andrew and Sandy once again for your generous donations.
Week Eleven: a Care Basket was delivered this week to Pam for her big birthday with a "zero" in it. Her place was fully decorated by family and hard to miss. Another care Basket was taken to Warwick and Marian. Marian was in hospital on Friday and we wish her well with her recovery. Week Twelve: we visited Maureen this week, one of our parishioners, who lives in Bonython and presented her with a basket of goodies. Next week sees the conclusion of the Spring Care Baskets and any further donations will be passed on to to our St Vincent de Paul Conference here in Kambah.
Week Thirteen: our final Spring Care Basket has been delivered to Pat who turns 90 years old on Wednesday 2 December. We wish her all the best for many years to come. As this is our last basket for the season I would like to thank all those who have contributed to making the concept of Care Baskets a meaningful one. It's not so much the baskets per se but the interaction between members of our community that has been so important. 2020 has been a difficult year and when things have really counted one has been able to tell who has been there ready to support others in their time of need. Thank you!
Mental HEALTH ISSUES
Tips for dealing with the issues of Covid19 social isolation 2020
Commencing the week of Monday 18 May, HRD (Australia) will be releasing short topical videos to assist people in dealing with some of the impacts that social isolation may be having on them. These videos are intended to provide general advice only. For specific individual services people should always consult their own medical or health care practitioner. Support and assistance are always available from Lifeline www.lifeline.org.au, Beyond Blue www.beyondblue.org.au, and Mind Australia www.mindaustralia.org.au, just to name a few of the services that can be readily accessed.

Help Needed
Volunteers Required
The philanthropic side of our business urgently seeks volunteers to assist us in our charity work (with both animals and people).
Animals:
- if you can assist Chris with the donation of much needed animal items for rural rescue groups ( ie crates, dog and cat food, bowls, toys, clean sheets and towels, leads, collars etc) or
- if you are able to transport donations to rural areas, please get in touch with us.
People:
- collecting bread from Bakehouse Kambah (we collect Saturday, Sunday and Monday afternoons at 5.30pm). We used to also collect on Tuesdays and Wednesday afternoons but have recently cut back to 3 afternoons.
- sorting, packing and delivering bread to the Kambah community (Sunday, Monday and Tuesday mornings)
- delivering bread to Queanbeyan and/or Bungendore to Little Oak Sanctuary on Monday afternoons
- assisting with home visits (WWVP Card required) to support people through friendship and companionship
- delivering groceries and prescription medicines throughout Kambah
- telephone "counselling" (training provided) to provide friendship and care
- working with our men's group (CRIMS - Christian Retiring Interesting Men) Thursday mornings
- making and delivering soup as part of our Winter Soup Kitchen
- preparing and delivering Spring Baskets of goodies to the elderly
- being available to assist with taking people to medical appointments and
- assembling and delivering special gift packs for birthdays, Easter, Christmas , Mother's Day and Father's Day (amongst others).
